Indian air travel growth 2nd highest globally in March: IATA
DELHI: The cheap
airfares offered by airlines earlier this year have finally managed to
arrest the constant fall in domestic air travel. International Air
Transport Association (IATA) on Wednesday said India saw the second
highest growth in domestic air travel in March, next only to China's
16.6% against a global average of 5.7%. This is a complete reversal of
fortunes as IATA
data had for months been showing that India was the worst performing in
domestic air travel as the country was recording the steepest fall
globally. data had for months been
showing that India was the worst performing in domestic air travel as
the country was recording the steepest fall globally.Indian domestic traffic
spiked 7% compared to a year ago, the second strongest performance. A
reduction in fares by several airlines serving the Indian domestic
market is the likely cause of the demand boost," IATA said. The
Directorate General of Civil Aviation had also released its data for
March last week which showed an upward trend from same month last year —
after constant month-on-month fall for many quarters. tnn
