Google Ads Based On Your Phone Calls – Is This Too Much?

Google Ads Based On Your Phone Calls – Is This Too Much?
It’s hard not to think this story is just creepy in so many ways…

But, Google filed a patent on a technology that essentially serves ads based on the background noise of your phone calls. The abstract from the patent explains:

Information about an environmental condition of a remote device is received, the environmental condition being determined based on a signal output from a sensor of the remote device or a sensor coupled to the remote device. An advertisement is identified based on the environmental condition, and the advertisement is provided to the remote device.

So, if I am speaking to someone on the phone about the horrendous heat down here in South Florida, am I going to receive some type of advertisement for air conditioning or fans? It appears with this technology, I just might.

Because this patent is just merely a submission, that doesn’t mean this is definite. But, can you imagine what this could mean for advertisers? How far could this really be taken?

Just playing devil’s advocate for a moment, could we also say that this is another means for receiving highly targeted (perhaps even helpful) ads based on our current environmental needs? Maybe I do need to buy a fan to ward off the heat.

Nonetheless, I still don’t think it will be accepted by the masses without extreme resistance.

Grasshoppers launches digital arm 'Grownups'

Tue, 13 Mar 2012 19:59:00

A creative powerhouse harnessing fresh minds and young talents, Grasshoppers has recently launched its zippy Online Division – “grownups”. With many pitches already lined up, the all new online team is already in the process of signing the digital mandate of two (undisclosed) clients. In terms of business growth, “grownups” adds value to the parent organization with its own round-up of services; Web Design and Development, SEO, Social Networking as well as E-mail and Viral Marketing.

When asked to comment on the name “grownups”, Arjun, CEO, Grasshoppers said, “There used to be radios, then came the television and now, with computers as our primary source of knowledge sharing, the advertising industry has evolved onto a whole new platform. Internet has transformed our general outlook to what all we can do for a product or a service. “grownups” is how we, Grasshoppers complete our gamut of services; in many ways ‘growing up’ with the industry”.

In recent years, Grasshoppers has ventured into the online space with a select few clients like HLFPPT, World Phone, iDiscoveri and AISECT, whose products and services required internet marketing. But with time, the demand for an online presence has increased steadily with more and more clients on the lookout for online solutions. This is where Grasshoppers took the game to the next level.

On his new brainchild, Arjun comments, “Today, clients want original and innovative ways to get customers to invite brands into their lives. Online infotainment is a great way to reach out to people, especially the youth, with their strong presence in the social space. Internet breaks the geographical barriers, giving us the chance to target a larger section of our audience in an effective yet entertaining manner. Needless to say, this Online Division is an integral key to our future growth”.

With the value addition of “grownups”, Grasshoppers is all geared up to accommodate full-fledged brand plans that include comprehensive web and social marketing. In many ways, “grownups” has been in the offing for a long time; like the grasshoppers say “it’s all about taking the right leap at the right time”.

Idea Cellular Partners RealNetworks for Ringback Tone Service

Thu, 23 Feb 2012 20:09:00

Mumbai: RealNetworks India Pvt Limited, a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of RealNetworks, Inc. (NASDAQ: RNWK), the US-based digital entertainment services company, has inked a long-term Ringback Tone (RBT) partnership with Idea Cellular.

Idea Cellular is India’s 3rd largest mobile services operator with over 100 million subscribers. RealNetworks won the deal after a rigorous open bidding process ahead of many global and India VAS players.

Idea has introduced several ‘industry first’ VAS innovations in the past, building a reputation as a thought leader in the telecom space. RealNetworks will power Dialer Tones for 10 key circles in Gujarat, Rajasthan, UP West, UP East, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Kolkata, Assam and North East.

The subscriber base of these circles constitute about one-third of Idea Cellular’s total base, who will now have access to globally advanced and innovative service features.

“Dialer Tones has matured as a product and growth has stagnated.  There is a need to invest in innovation and think out-of-the-box. We hope to partly address this through our partnership with RealNetworks. After a rigorous evaluation process, RealNetworks emerged as ‘best fit’ for the job at hand. We hope to leverage their global expertise in music, technology and licensing,” said Sashi Shankar, CMO, Idea Cellular Limited.

“We are honored to be chosen as the RBT partner of Idea Cellular,” said DJLee, Head of RealNetworks AsiaPacific Co., Ltd. “RealNetworks global expertise in RBT deployment, combined with Idea Cellular’s deep and ongoing commitment to its subscribers’ satisfaction means that Idea’s subscribers will have the opportunity to enjoy innovative, reliable and fun RBT services.”

RealNetworks is a global pioneer in Ringback Tone Services, and its RBT ASP service is available through 16 mobile operators in 10 countries around the world with 588 million subscribers.

Recently, RealNetworks opened its second office in India in Mumbai as a result of the new deal with Idea Cellular. “RealNetworks India plans to aggressively expand our base with multiple carriers in Mumbai as well as across the country,” said DJ Kim, Country Manager, RealNetworks India Pvt. Limited. “We will move ahead to bring RealNetworks globally proven VAS services and expertise from advanced markets like USA, Korea and Europe to the fast-growing and promising India market.”

RealNetworks has been steadily growing its business in India since the company opened its first office in National Capital Region (NCR) in 2005. RealNetworks already provides RBT service for Tier 1 and Tier 2 carriers as well as VAS operations to Tier 1 carriers.
