Mumbai: Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd, the Indian unit of Asia’s biggest car maker, said that it will recall at least 8,700 Camry and Corolla Altis cars to inspect faulty power window master switches (PWMS).
Corolla Altis models manufactured between 30 July 2008, and 1 September 2008, and Toyota’s premium sedan Camry, produced between 1 September 2006, and 31 July 2008, will be recalled by the company.
“On certain Corolla Altis and Camry models of the
specified years, PWMS may begin to feel notchy or become inoperative,”
the company said in a release on Wednesday. “This can be due to wear and
tear over time, of specific contact points in PWMS.”
It will inform the owners of the vehicles to be inspected
through a notification by letter or by phone call. The company will
also start a recall campaign across its dealerships starting November.
The recall in India is part of Toyota Motor’s overall voluntary recall of 7.4 million vehicles globally, including certain Vitz, Yaris and Corolla models, because of the malfunctioning power window switches.
The firm will recall 2.47 million vehicles in the US, as
well as 1.40 million vehicles in China and 1.39 million vehicles in
Europe, making it the biggest single recall since Ford Motor Co. asked owners of 7.9 million vehicles to bring their vehicles back in 1996.
The recall comes a day after Toyota reported that sales
fell 48.9% year-on-year in China in September. Japanese car brands have
suffered as a result of an outbreak of anti-Japan sentiment in China in
response to a territorial dispute between the two countries.
The vehicles recalled outside Japan include some Yaris, Vios, Corolla, Matrix, Auris, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra, Sequoia, xB and xD vehicles produced between 2005 and 2010.
“No accidents, injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of the window problem,” said Shino Yamada, a spokeswoman for Toyota.
