Ford to roll out vehicles from Sanand next year

Come 2014, Ford India will start selling vehicles made/assembled at its upcoming facility at Sanand in Gujarat.

With 5,000 staff, the plant can roll out 4.4 lakh vehicles and 6.1 lakh engines annually. Ford India has another plant in Chennai.

The company intends to export 25% of its vehicle output and 40% of engines made in India, said Joginder Singh, president and MD of Ford India.

On Friday, the US-based auto major’s India unit showcased the EcoSport, its upcoming compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) which is expected to be launched in June.

The vehicle will be introduced in three engine options with both manual and automatic transmissions. The EcoSport is a potential game-changer and will likely boost Ford’s exports from India, said Singh.

Ford India invested $140 million on the Chennai factory expansion to meet both Indian and global demand. It already exports its flagship vehicle, the Figo, to 38 countries, mostly in the Asia-Pacific region. Soon, the EcoSport will expand the geography, Singh said.

Singh said the recent indecent hence controversial Figo advertisement, for which Ford India apologised, would not affect sales. “The values of Ford and our brands are well-known. We stick to those values day in and day out.”
