BMW mum on sales figures as Audi closes in

NEW DELHI: At a time when Audi breathes down its neck and threatens to dethrone it from the position of India's top luxury carmaker, BMW has refused to share monthly sales data with industry body (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) Siam, forcing the auto body to seek an explanation from the German major.
Siam comes out with wholesale sales data (vehicles sold to dealers by companies) of various automobile companies operating in India in the second week of every month, and this information is also used by the government for computation of various official statistics.
BMW says that it is unable to give numbers to Siam since the industry body comes out with wholesale data, and not with actual sales made at the retail (dealers) level. "BMW Group, as per its global policy, does not release the wholesale figures. Only retail sales figures are released by BMW Group subsidiaries across the world," the company said in response to queries sent by TOI. "Since Siam needs only the wholesale figures and BMW Group reports only the retail sales figures, we have decided to discontinue reporting retail sales figures to Siam that anyway are not required by Siam." Functionaries at Siam, however, are not happy with BMW's stand. "We will be issuing them a notice as withholding of data is not fair to other players," Sugato Sen, senior director at Siam, said.
