What started out as a search for finding affordable ways to light up remote villages, which have no access to electricity, has over the years turned up interesting products that even the more affluent and the middle class homes can own – for recreation, decoration or emergencies.

The solar lighting revolution is well and truly upon us. Things have come a long way from the times when harnessing the sun necessarily meant huge photovoltaic panels and wires and contraptions to make them work. Solar lights have been minaturised over the years and also made affordable, but not good enough for you to get off the electricity grid. However, it still has some utility and good looks. We look at some trendy new solar lights this week.
