Eye on polls, govt sells onions at cheaper rates across city
NEW DELHI: Onion prices seem to have turned into a political hot potato
in Delhi a couple of months before the Assembly elections.
A day after Hindustan Times reported about the spiralling prices of onions in the city, the Delhi government sprung into action, putting in place intervention measures to check the rising prices.
The government, which is leaving nothing to chance before the Assembly elections, has again started selling onions at ` 60 per kilogram in several parts of the city through mobile vans.
“We had made onions available at cheaper rates for a month, but
stopped the intervention when the prices stabilised because of supplies
that came in from the southern states. This price rise was unanticipated
but we have already started making onions available to Delhiites at
prices that are lower than retail market rates,” said Raj Kumar Chauhan,
development minister, Delhi government.

While attributing the steep rise in prices to delayed arrival in the supply of onions, government officials said they were keeping a close watch on the price trend, which they said was likely to even out in the coming week.
