Wipro & HCL have an edge in writing Smartphone apps

BANGALORE: Top outsourcing
customers are asking vendors to write applications for iPads and Androidbased
devices, creating a $17 billion opportunity . Wipro Technologies, HCL and
mid-sized software product firm Persistent
Systems
have an edge over rivals in making the best of this opportunity , as
more outsourcing buyers seek to offer new solutions to their customers
increasingly using more and more mobile devices.

John C McCarthy,
principal analyst at the Cambridge , Massachusetts-based Forrester Research,
says these three firms have the required product development mindset for writing
these mobile applications, and for change, "the product engineering experience
of these companies puts them ahead of Infosys, Cognizant and others," he says.

"To get into this game, you need to have product development mindset,
which is a challenge for many," McCarthy says. Top outsourcing clients such as
GE are already creating iPhone, iPad and other Android applications for a large
number of their employees.

Wells Fargo is using mobile applications to
demonstrate its products to customers. According to Forrester, more than 350
companies have built their own branded apps to reach prospects and customers,
and 52% of the respondents to a recent Forrester mobile strategy survey stated
that one of their top three mobile goals was to "increase customer engagement ."
